Lay's USA Kettle Cooked Indian Tikka Masala

These chips are hilarious to me guys. They really are.
Look, I don't eat a lot of Tikka Masala okay. I don't eat much Indian food at all. I really hate/despise Cumin, and Indian Food seems to be rife with it. So, my point is, I don't know how representative of Tikka Masala these are.
BUT. If you are looking for a spicy bag of Kettle Cooked Chicken Top Ramen flavored chips... LOOK NO FURTHER!

These are TOP RAMEN flavored chips. Dead on. Yes they are spicy and smell of the devil's favorite spice: Cumin. BUT the flavor is exactly Chicken Top Ramen. But Spicy.

The chip quality is fine. USA makes a solid Kettle Chip. The seasoning is bright and gives the chips and orange glow. The chips look fine.

The dopeness in this bag is the seasoning. It is a magical secret.

I used to eat Top Ramen Chicken seasoning loose in the palm of my hand. OR break apart solid Ramen bricks and season those and eat them dry... I do NOT know if that is bad for you, I just know that I did it. And this seems like a better way to get your fix.

SO, if you just dont smell into the bag, these are AMAZING! lol.

Lay's Spain Gourmet Corte Fino

Mmm. These are fantastic!
These "Corte Fino" or "Fine(ly) Cut" chips from Lay's Spain are simplicity at it's finest. The chips are lightly salted and cooked in Sunflower oil which gives them a really delicate flavor.
They are thin cut, however they have a lot of crunch...i'd guess they are small batch or kettle cooked.
Unlike the Olive Oil cooked chips Lay's Spain offers, which I found to be a bit bitter and unpleasant... these chips offer similar distinct oil taste but with salt and without the bitterness. That Sunflower oil makes such a difference in taste and really elevates this from a simple bag of salted crisps.
There isn't really much more to say about these. They are SO simple, but SO addictive.
If you pass through Spain and can get your hands on these, I highly recommend them!

Boulder Canyon Pumpkin Pie

In the spirit of the season, today we've got a NON-LAY'S bag! Here is Boulder Canyon's "Pumpkin Pie" flavored Kettle Cooked Potato Chips. This bag is CRAZY good! It tastes JUST LIKE Pumpkin Pie!
The cook on the chips is really nice, it's not that overly crunchy Kettle style, the texture is more like regular cooked chips. The seasoning is very reminiscent of these Cinnamon Sugar Cheetos Sweetos, or Lay's Cappuccino but with a Pumpkin Pie spice twist. Basically it tastes like real Pumpkin Pie with lots of Cinnamon.
There is a flaw to these chips though. While the seasoning is awesome, and the chips are well cooked, something is amiss between the 2. The seasoning seems to come off the chips really easily. When you're eating them, you basically get all the seasoning, and then it's gone, and all that's left is a plain un-seasoned potato flavor. It's actually kind of unpleasant. For me though, that was easily remedied by just shoving 18 more chips in my mouth before I was done chewing. The flavor is addictive, it just disappears quickly.
If you are a sweet chip fan like I am, or a Pumpkin Spice fan, you gotta seek these out. I picked these up at Cost Plus World Market in their Pumpkin Spice area. They are fun and unique in a world full of boring savory chip flavors.

Gotta Get At This: Lay's USA Passport to Flavor promotion

Lay's USA just announced 4 new flavors that will be released this month of a limited time. "Brazilian Picanha", "Chinese Szechuan Chicken", "Wavy Greek Tzatziki" and "Kettle Cooked Indian Tikka Masala".
Are you a Lay's nerd noticing something fishy here? Me too. "Wavy Greek Tzatziki" and "Kettle Cooked Indian Tikka Masala" already exist Lay's!! Don't try to trick me!! These are both previously released Costco exclusive flavors. Read my review of  Tzatziki here.
THAT BEING SAID, the flavors will still be new to the general public. And won't come in ridiculous giant sized bags. The promotion is a fun tie in with the Summer Olympics in Brazil. These types of flavors haven't really been explored in the US... so it will be nice change on shelves.

Flavors: For those out of the know; "Brazilian Picanha" is a favored cut of beef at Brazilian Churrascarias, "Chinese Szechuan Chicken" is a deep fried or stir fried Chicken dish that uses the spicy Szechuan peppers for the Szechuan province in China along with Garlic, "Greek Tzatziki" is a Yogurt dip popular in Mediterranean cuisine that is seasoned with Mint, Cucumber, and Garlic, and "Indian Tikka Masala" is a Chicken dish popular in India and the UK composed of Yogurt Marinated Chicken that is then added to a Tomato based sauce with spice mix.
All of these flavors sound bold and exciting.
They will be available in the USA July 25th. Will you be searching for any of these?

Lay's USA Kettle Cooked GreekTown Gyro

Here's a discontinued flavor from last year's "Do Us a Flavor" competition in the US. "Greektown Gyro" on a Kettle Cooked Chip.
yo. These are addictive and nasty all at the same time.
SO, you've got the Kettle Cooked chip, which to me has slowly been declining in quality over at Lay's USA (it used to be my favorite, but as the regular cut chip has improved, this one seems to be getting less attention.)
The chip has a weird texture, not quite Kettle, not quite regular. It tasted more like the Thick Cut line of chips.
The seasoning is what saves it, but only for a moment. This seasoning comes with everything you could want from a gyro flavor, it's robust and meaty, but with a hint of refreshing yogurt and cucumber. My only complaint about the seasoning is... why the fruck is it SO SALTY!!?? The level of salt on these was downright disgusting. It negates how good the complex seasoning is. That, paired with a poorly cooked potato, lead this to be a fail for me. I'm not surprised to see it not win. Which is sad, cuz I think they were close to something fun and tasty. Oh well.

Lay's USA Kettle Cooked Olive Oil & Herbs

Here's Kettle Cooked Olive Oil & Herbs, a bag in the current US Flavor Swap competition.

It's not good.
The bag smells powerfully of Olive Oil, and the first chip or two has the Olive Oil flavor, but the other seasonings overwhelm the subtlety of Olive Oil. The herbs are there, but more potently you get a LOT of Garlic powder. I could feel it on my finger tips and I could taste it accumulating on my palette. The more I ate, the less this bag tasted of Olive Oil. It began to have almost a cheesy taste to it. But it was just too much Garlic powder. The bag is also over salted.
I complained that Spain's Olive Oil bag could have benefited from some salt to enhance the flavor of the potato... but this skews in the complete other direction. Too much Salt, too much Garlic.
On top of that, the chips are not cooked well AT ALL. I always have been appreciative of the cook on all the chips in the Kettle Cooked line, but these ones fail terribly. They are more like stale thick cut chips than the usual kettle cooked.

I don't know what went wrong here. I anticipated this being one of my favorite flavors, but in my opinion it's a wasted opportunity.

Lay's USA Do Us A Flavor 2015 Winner & Flavor Swap 2016 Contest

In case you hadn't heard elsewhere, Southern Biscuits and Gravy was announced the 2015 Do Us A Flavor Winning Flavor. (I haven't reviewed it yet, as it is still unopened in my kitchen #DietLife, but it had to have been better than the Reuben flavor). Hailey Green, the flavor's creator, won a Million Dollars for her flavor. That's FRIKIN incredible! If you preferred the other flavors in this contest, go ahead and snatch them up now as they are still available presumably til early February.
BUT
let's move on to the more interesting news. Lay's has decided to mix it up with contests finally & try something new for 2016. The "Flavor Swap" contest pits existing Lay's flavors against new versions. Customers will vote beginning February 8th online at www.flavorswap.com. The flavors that get the most votes of the duos will stay on shelves indefinitely. This means some beloved favorites could end up gone for good.
I'm loving this concept!

Gotta Get At This: Lay's Chile Sensaciones Collection Salmón Ahumado con Queso Crema, Queso Parmesano, Costillar con Finas Hierbas, and Original

 Lay's Chile is launching a beautifully packaged new collection called the "Sensaciones" collection. It's similar to the Sensations flavors found Globally in that the line is composed of complex and intriguing flavors. However, Chile makes the collection their own by making it a Kettle Cooked collection. This is the only Kettle Cooked Sensations line that I am aware of. The bold collection consists of a "Queso Parmesano/ Parmesan Cheese" flavor, "Salmón Ahumado con Queso Crema/Smoked Salmon with Cream Cheese" flavor, "Costillar con Finas Hierbas/ Rack of Ribs with Fine Herbs", and "Original". All of these flavors, even the overly fancied up Original, sound exquisite. I'm very happy to see a Parmesan bag and the Rack of Ribs sounds epic. All in all, I'd say this collection is hunt worthy! Margarita Colombia Receta Clasica Alitas BBQ

Here is a bag I've been waiting to try for some time now; Margarita Colombia's Receta Clasica Alitas BBQ. "Receta Clasica" refers to the "Classic Recipe" style cook on these chips... they are really quite similar to Kettle Chips (and the packaging is very reminiscent of the Kettle bags we see worldwide). There is a big difference though... these bad boys are cooked with the skin ON. mmm, SKIN. I personally like to see potato skins on the edges of the chip, I feel like the potato looks fresher... I know; weird. The chip is thicker than a normal cut, and thus has a ton more crunch. The flavor is "Alitas BBQ" or "BBQ Chicken Wings". The sweet bbq flavor definitely comes through from the moment you smell the open bag to the last bite. The prominent flavor that comes through is first Chicken, and then it's joined by that sweetness and a nice variety of savory spice from the BBQ sauce seasoning. The bold combo tasted fantastic on these thicker, crunchier, skin-on chips. All in all, a great bag, definitely worth the hunt. The only other comment I'll make about it, is that I thought it reminded me a lot of Margarita's "Pollo a la Brasa" flavor, albeit on a different cut chip. And I find this cut to be more suited to it. If given a choice between the 2, I would hands down grab this one off the rack.

Lay's USA Kettle Cooked Lattice Cut Aged Cheddar & Black Pepper

I've been looking forward to trying these for some time now. That photo of the Lattice Cut chip on the front looks AMAZING! mmm.
However, in my opinion, the texture of this chip is TOO hard. It's crunchy and it's pretty, but they were just too thin and hard for me. At first smell, you catch the black pepper aroma. The chip touches your tongue and it takes some work to crack through them with your teeth. But the texture is different and unique, so many may enjoy it for the exact reason that it gave me issue.
The yummy thickness of the crunchy potato adds that pure potato taste I look for in a chip, and that taste is complimented by a nice mellow, creamy sharp cheddar flavor. It isn't over powering, it's fairly subtle. Then the refreshing spice cuts through the sharp cheese and rich, thick, potato. Afterwards, the pepper stays bright on the middle of your tongue. This flavor combination comes across as elegant and well thought out. I really enjoyed the flavor. I definitely hadn't tried any flavor like it before.
I enjoyed the chip cut because it was new and exciting, but it's not a favorite. I could see this seasoning being well suited for Lay's typical Kettle Cooked chips... and while it also works here, sadly, I don't think the Lattice Cut is ever gonna be one of my favorites. But, I would eat it again, and if you are looking for interesting new flavors from Lay's USA, I think this needs to be on your list.

For the uninitiated, Poutine is a Canadian classic... it's basically gravy and cheese curds on fries. The good lord knows that Bacon makes everything taste better... and so does Lay's, cuz they added it to their poutine flavored chips... (Also, Poutine is a year round flavor offered in Canada, so they gotta make this one stand out somehow. lol). I'm guessing this is the flavor to beat. Canadians already get "Smokey Bacon" and "Poutine" chips... so I reckon they will love the combination. 

"Cinnamon Bun" is a genius idea already... flavoring a chip to taste like a "Cinnamon Bun" is Hyper-genius! If you think about the unseasoned chip as a blank canvas (like the mighty Bun) and flavor that bad boy up with cinnamon and vanilla. MMMMM. It is probably gonna be the BOMB. (or nasty. it could be nasty too. who knows.)

"Jalepeno Mac N Cheese"... here us Americans were sitting cocky with our "Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese"... while all along the Canadians were in a lab somewhere concocting THIS!!?? 

Jalepeno. ANNNND. Macaroni and Cheese!!

HOW ARE WE STILL EVEN A SUPER POWER??

Refreshingly spicy Jalepeno against decadent Mac N Cheese....seriously. There is no way this will not be incredibly delicious.

The 4th finalist is "Tzatzki"... I am half Egyptian. This is my people's Ketchup, ok? We put this on EVERYTHING... because it belongs on everything. Including potato chips. This can not be bad. There's no way. 

OH, i'm sorry, what is Tzatzki you ask? It's basically plain yogurt with mint and fresh cucumber... I add Garlic Salt... some people use fresh garlic and lemon too... but the recipe kind of depends on who you ask. This will make every meal better. I'm not joking, I've seen my dad put it on Mexican food, Chinese food, Burgers... it doesn't matter. It is THAT good.

I just got a new passport, so I'm pretty much going to go now and get these... I can be there in 3 hours... who's coming??

Lay's USA Kettle Cooked Wasabi Ginger

Crippling fear. That is what gripped me as I stared at this bag. My friend's had their cameras out, ready to film what they expected to be tears running down my face after one bite. I muscled up the courage to open the bag. Took a whiff... I definitely smelled potato... and, is that soy sauce? with a dash of ginger? My nose kept searching, there it was... WASABI. Uhoh. What am I doing? I silently asked myself this question.
My friends were still watching, cheering; I had to do it. I placed a chip on my tongue. NUCLEAR. Something, only God really knows what it was, scorched my tongue... but I didn't taste Wasabi... not yet. After the burn my face made so many twists I didn't know what was happening. Then I tasted the rich potato flavor of a Lay's Kettle Cooked chip... finally some relief... but it was short lived for me, as the flavor of Wasabi crept from the back of my tongue forward. Not spicy, just the aroma of Wasabi... and a hint of Ginger, reminding me that I would experience no relief.

Let me give you a little background... If you are new to this blog I am a self proclaimed "wuss". You want to know my favorite flavor of Lay's? Original. I do this blog because I am fascinated with the product line Lay's (Etc.) have launched world wide, and I was intrigued that no one had ever documented online what varietals of these homeland heroes people were eating overseas. I don't do this because I want to eat chips everyday, I do it because I am passionately curious.
Spicy chips will never be my thing. I whine a LOT about spice... but I've been trying to expand my spice horizons. However, although here in California I eat a TON of sushi, if even a little Wasabi touches my rolls, I have a little inner-body cry session.

SO. Wasabi Ginger.... I was terrified. And that first chip scared me. But, I have to admit. It actually wasn't that bad. And I'm gonna go out on a ledge and say, it's all to do with the magic Kettle Cooked chip. I've talked on here before about the Kettle Cooked Lay's chip. I think it's their most flavorful chip and has a great texture. That thick cut, more flavorful chip, stands up well to the shock seasoning in this bag. ALSO, I don't think that the Wasabi flavor was actually cranked up that high. It was almost like a modest version of what I had in my head. The Wasabi just kind of sneaks onto your palate after you've swallowed the chip. I'm guessing the real shock comes from Horseradish which is listed in the ingredients, and I am NOT a fan of that stuff. One of my friends who had it with me said she didn't feel like it was spicy at all. And she eats her sushi with Wasabi regularly, so it may have just been my being a big baby. BUT since this is my blog, it really just matters how I felt. The star of this bag is really the soy sauce. It added the right seasoning to the chip to make the heat and shock bearable. I've had bags before that made me stop eating after 1 chip... and this was not even close. I ate out of this bag, heat and all, for another few minutes. It's actually not too far from what Lay's already offer in their Jalapeno Kettle Cooked Chips.

If you are a fan of spice, don't look past this bag because it isn't Sriracha. As someone who NEVER thought they would like it, I really think Lay's did an awesome job with this bag. It made me a believer. Try it now before it disappears! And let us know in the comments what you think!

Contest: Lay's USA Do Us A Flavor 2014 Finalists Announced

Today Lay's USA announced the 4 finalists in 2014's "Do Us A Flavor" contest. The flavors are even more exciting then I could have imagined; "Cappuccino", "Wasabi Ginger", "Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese", and "Mango Salsa". This year Lay's expanded their contest to include other textures like Kettle Cooked and Wavy which lends itself better to certain flavors. "Cappuccino" and "Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese" will both come in the standard, tried and true, Lay's cut.
"Cappuccino" sounds awesome to me, I'm a huge fan of the salty-sweet combo, and it seems to be working for Lay's. I loved "Chicken & Waffles" last year, and the Chocolate covered Wavy chips released at Christmas were such a hit that I couldn't even get a bag. "Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese" seems like the sure-to-be winner. Americans love a Cheesy chip... look how well "Garlic Cheesy Bread" did last year, eventually becoming the winning flavor. This flavor has everything foodie fans love; Cheese, Bacon, and Macaroni & Cheese. The other flavors are a bit more fun, but this one is the only one I see having mass appeal.
The Kettle Cooked option comes in "Wasabi Ginger", I'm personally not excited, but I can see people loving this. I can't bare Wasabi. But, I think if you loved "Siracha" last year, you will be intrigued by this bag. And I think the Kettle Cooked chip will suit it well. The thicker cut, richer potato flavor, and saltyness will stand up to the brightness of the Wasabi and Ginger. For a similar reason, the Wavy "Mango Salsa" bag is probably the bag I will be buying the most. "Mango Salsa" is a sweet take on refreshing salsa... that flavor, paired with thicker, crunchier Wavy chips, sounds like a perfect match.

Gotta Get At This: Lay's USA Kettle Cooked Lattice Cut Aged Cheddar & Black Pepper and Roasted Garlic & Sea Salt

Hey guys, gotta share before I miss the boat on these. This past March, Lay's launched Lattice Cut. Um, could these look any more delicious??? Dang. "Roasted Garlic & Sea Salt"?? Wow. Just sounds so good. I've kept my eyes peeled for these in the wild but the only one I have found so far is a personal size bag of the "Aged Cheddar & Black Pepper" (review coming soon) at a small gas station when I was 45 miles away from my house. Otherwise, these bad boys are playing hard to get in Southern California. I like seeing new things like this popping up. I can't think of anyone else doing a Lattice Cut on chips, so points to Lay's for these. Super cool, can't wait to try!!

Gotta Get At This: Lay's USA Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat

How I missed this, I'll never know. But, apparently last summer Lay's USA released new Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat offerings. I just thought they were the same flavors with reduced fat. BUT they actually introduced 2 new flavors into the collection... Sundried Tomato and Parmesan (OMG!!) and Applewood Smoked BBQ.

Both bags contain 40% less fat than regular potato chips. Which is a LOT less fat.
I haven't had Kettle Cooked chips in some time, but they are definitely my favorite line in the US. They have a better Potato taste, and the texture is great. Compared to other Kettle brands they are awesome because they arent SUPER rock hard. I always say that I feel like I am going to break a tooth on most Kettle cooked chips, but Lay's are perfectly crunchy. They also tend to be seasoned better than the regular line. So, Ill have to hunt these down and give them a taste.
Sorry that the news is coming so late, but if you were in the dark like me and just wasn't paying attention, now you know.
The line also includes a 40% less fat version of the Original/ Salted Kettle Chips... which had already been available for a while when these came out.

Lay's Canada Kettle Cooked Dill Pickle

Heres a bag of Dill Pickle Lay's Kettle Cooked Chips that sister-face brought me back from her trip to Toronto. She is a die hard Pickle lover so I wasn't surprised she picked these up. Me on the other hand... I have no position on the status of Pickles. So I figured I would pop this bag open and share with her one lazy day. The bag smelled nice and potato-y with a kick of pickle-y vinegar aroma. I dove into the bag, not sure of what to expect... No.1: Crunch. Excellent, thick cut, kettle cooked, crunchiness. What Lay's has managed to do with their Kettle Cooked line is so perfect. It is never rock hard, snap a tooth, crunch. It is just the marriage between thick flavorful chip and exciting texture. I really adore this line, both at home and now abroad. No.2: Potato-ness. The Kettle Cooked line always delivers a better potato product. The thick cut chip and the smaller batch cooking gives the chip a much more authentic potato flavor. This is what you are paying for; fried potato... not fried air soaked in seasoning. No.3: Pickle-Power. The pickle flavor is so nice on these chips! It is like you pulled the pickle slice out of the jar and put it on top of the chip. It is authentic, familiar, and delicious. Just realistic pickled flavored chips. I couldn't taste the dill separately, but I only eat Dill Pickles, so I think I just perceived the taste as the only pickle I'm familiar with. You can see the Dill on the chips though, which makes them look really yummy. I think I loved these because they are in the same family as the Vinegar chips (my favorite). These are acidic and you get the nice sour Pickle brine taste... matched with savory potato and salt. I think these are just an excellent bag of chips. If you like Pickles, Sour, Vinegar, etc. You will adore this bag. Enjoy!

Gotta Get At This: Lay's France Sélections

New collection of chips out of France right now... These 3 flavors make up the Lay's Sélection collection. The range consists of Sea Salt, Cheddar and Red Onion, and Cream and Fine Herbs. I'm not quite sure if these are Kettle Cooked, but they are similar. The bag reads "Extra Crispy" and the website describes them as thicker potato cuts, cooked in a special process. I wasn't sure if this special process is Kettle cooking, because of the style of the chips on the front of the bag. So anywayyyyys. These are the new chips out of France. If you try em, let us know how they taste!

Maui Style Potato Chips

So here's a bag of Maui Style Potato Chips. Normally I like to write about bags with the Yellow circle logo, but today we get an exception because I thought these fell into the same spectrum. These Maui Style are produced by Frito Lay USA; BUT they can only be bought in Hawaii (or at a handful of Asian or Hawaiian stores), thus I consider them somewhat of an import. My mom was really thoughtful and grabbed these for me on her latest trip to Hawaii.
These are cooked Maui style... which is a kettle cooked style. These are like the laidback cousin of Lay's Kettle Cooked chips. The slices are bigger and flatter, the chip is noticeably more oily, and the chip is somehow thick and transparent at the same time. Like the Kettle Cooked line, these are really crunchy and allow for more potato taste. When the chip touches your tongue you instantly taste a very rich oil... almost like butter. It's not gross and greasy... its rich and tasty... but it might freak you out at first sight. The chips are full blown transparent. See Thru. But the chip is thick, so its kind of bizarre. They dont have visible salt on them, but they are SUPER salty. This is very complimentary to the oil... and normally I would call it heavy handed seasoning... but somehow it works. It was almost as if the potatoes had been soaked in salt water for a long time before they were cooked, because the salt seemed to permeate the chip. If you like Kettle style and aren't afraid of the insane calories (450 for a bag... about the size you would get at Subway), then I def think these are worth a try on your next trip to the islands.

Gotta Get At This: Margarita Tradiciones

YAY. New chips!! Looks like Margarita from Colombia has just launched a new line called "Tradiciones". They are advertising the line as crunchier than the typical chip and that the chips will be made with the potato skins on. MMM my favorite part is def the skin, so this should be a fun new line. "Tradiciones" means "Traditions" in English, and the line is being advertised with the tagline "El Sabor que revive Buenos Momentos"... essentially "The flavor that revives good moments (or memories)". They look like they may be Kettle cooked, but I can't be sure based on the website. There are 3 flavors in the line "Con Toque de Sal" or "a touch of Salt", "Con Toque de Ajo" or "a touch of Garlic", and "Con Sazón Casera" which is "home-style seasonings".
(Note that on youtube there is a 90's ad for homestyle/Casera chips from Margarita... so this flavor may be a re-release. ). I am SOO down to try the Garlic flavored ones and in fact the whole line sounds yummy. I don't know if these are permanent editions or limited, but if you have a hookup in South America, try and track em down :))
